John Wunderlich :: Blog :: Great night

November 29, 2007

It was a great night. the first half hour was all immigration with one question to Ron Paul about whether the NAU is a real worry or just conspiracy theory. He said it is real. Tom came off very well as did Duncan Hunter. I just wish Tom had been given more opportunity. His issue was front and center in this debate.

  1. I agree.  Tom did very, very well; but like all of the other media sponsored debates, the media selected top tier got at least twice as much time to talk.

Tells me the media is admitting people want to know about border security and illegal immigration so they had to let to top tier 'out Tancredo Tancredo'

  2. I agree.  The issue was front and center, and the person with the most knowledge and know how is always pushed aside, particularly when the MSM has anything to do with it.  Tom tried a number of times to get into more of it, and raised his hand a number of times, but Anderson Cooper ignored him most of the time and let the usual "weak sisters" get the extra time and exposure.  As bobbie said, that got at least twice as much talk time.

  3. Someone on the Des Moines Register forum posted the talk time for each candidate:

    Giuliani -- 16:38, during 20 times
    Romney -- 13:18, during 19 times
    Thompson -- 12:16, during 12 times
    McCain -- 11:00, during 12 times
    Huckabee -- 10:00, during 11 times
    Paul -- 7:43, during 9 times
    Hunter -- 5:06, during 7 times
    Tancredo -- 3:49, during 7 times

  5. I was fortunate enough to attend the YouTube debate.
I thought Rep Tancredo came across well and given how seldom he was called upon and only given hurry up 30 second response opportunities at that, it is amazing he is able to get out as much of his message as he does.
There were approximately 1600 people in attendance. The seating scheme (ticketed) is important to understand if you are going to appreciate how the candidates support comes across on TV.
Based on my observation the "Party" elites were seated up front and those gaining admission as supporters of a particular candidate were assisgned seats in the rear of the auditorium.  Also, the number of "Party" elites far outnumber campaign supporters.  The resulting dynamic is that the candidates and issues  supported by the party elites gain the most applause that you can hear on TV.
Nonetheless, there were just enough of those such as myself, that we did manage to make the necessary noise booing senator mccain and his we were not offering amnesty comment to force the moderator, Anderson Cooper, to turn around to us and plead that we let him speak. After watching the debate on TV I can tell you that the sound you hear on TV is about 1/2 of what you hear in person.
Rep Tancredo gained a lot of favorable response on the issue of Government spending with his answer about the going to Mars question.
A Huckabee supporter sitting next to me commented that "Tancredo has got this one right, we need to get rid of welfare for star trekers".  To which I responded, that is why you need to support Rep Tancredo, he does not support using taxpayer monies to support contact with aliens no matter where they are located, including in Arkansas.  We didn't have much conversation after that.
